Gas field exploration to create 1,200 jobs - 07/08/2012

A new energy project has been announced that will see the sixth largest gas field constructed in the UK Southern North Sea.

Operator GDF Suez has partnered with Centrica and Bayerngas to develop the £1.4 billion Cygnus initiative, which will initially create 1,200 jobs in the UK.

Production is to begin in late 2015 and over the next four years 4,000 indirect and direct positions will be awarded to British employees.

Centrica chief executive Sam Laidlaw said: "Today's (August 7th) announcement represents a significant boost to the UK's long-term energy security and creates much needed jobs."

He added that Centrica handles around one-third of the UK's gas and supplies half of the nation's homes, which makes the project to "unlock" the remaining North Sea energy supply "extremely important".

The Cygnus field is the largest discovery in the Southern Gas Basin in the last 25 years and is expected to meet demand for nearly one-and-a-half million homes at peak production.
