Scottish government launches cheap energy campaign - 02/03/2009

The Scottish government has launched a £60 million campaign to help tackle the impact of price rises from energy suppliers.

Designed particularly with young families in mind, the Energy Assistance Package was launched by Alex Neil, the housing and communities minister.

Assistance will be provided to make sure families in Glasgow are receiving the benefits they are entitled to and are paying the right energy tariffs. In addition, energy-efficient measures such as cavity wall and loft insulation will be provided to many households.

Mr Neil said: "The most vulnerable members of society will be targeted - pensioners and for the first time, low-income families. I want to see incomes boosted, fuel bills reduced and energy efficiency improved in homes."

He added that the intention was to reduce the number of Scottish homes currently living in fuel poverty, which at the moment comprises a quarter of all Scottish households.

A series of price rises from energy companies last year are thought to have pushed the fuel poverty figure past five million.
