Coalition pursues cheap energy prices - 06/03/2009

While homeowners can compare energy prices to pursue lower costs, ten separate organisations have formed a coalition calling on MPs to eradicate fuel poverty.

The Elmbridge Guardian reports that the group is drumming up support for a new bill which is intended to tackle fuel poverty by facilitating the installation of energy-efficient devices and materials in UK homes.

Nearly one in six households in the south-east are officially living in fuel poverty, with nearly 6,300 homes in Esher and Walton having to allocate more than ten per cent of their annual income for energy bills.

Jonathan Stearn, a campaigner for Consumer Focus, said: "By writing to their local MP to ask that they support the bill, people can help to lift millions of the poorest consumers out of fuel poverty and improve the environment for future generations."

Fuel poverty is thought to afflict more than five million households across the UK, with pensioners comprising a significant number.

The government increased the winter fuel allowance to help homeowners cope with the recent freezing temperatures.
