Pensioners who may be planning to switch energy companies can also claim their share of benefits worth a combined £5 billion, reports lovemoney.com.
Age Concern believes that many of the 2.5 million pensioners currently living in poverty do not realise what benefits they can claim to help cope with steep energy prices.
Homeowners aged over 60 are eligible for a Winter Fuel Payment, the sum of which increases depending on the specific age of the claimant, while many pensioners are also eligible for free cavity wall and loft insulation, which helps to both lower bills and reduce carbon emissions.
All the major energy companies in the UK introduced steep price rises throughout the course of last year and although they have since announced cost reductions, these do not match the scale of the increases so consumers will still be paying more than they have done in recent years.
As a result, vulnerable homeowners could seek advice on what help is available to them in coping with their household bills.
Npower recently announced it will cut its electricity prices by eight per cent in the next few weeks.
