Customers could compare energy prices as summer consumption drops - 03/04/2009

Customers looking to switch energy companies may be interested to learn that consumption could fall in the coming months in response to the recession.

Figures from National Grid reveal that gas usage could drop by six per cent in the coming months, while a reduction in summer electricity demand is also expected, reports the Independent.

As the weather grows warmer there is less need to heat homes, while bill-payers are more aware of saving money during the recession.

National Grid told the paper: "On the demand side of our assessment of the summer outlook, clearly the biggest change for the coming summer from last summer is the impact of the recession."

The organisation added that it expects a reduction in demand to the tune of 1.1 gigawatts during the summer.

All the UK's major energy companies introduced substantial price rises last year and received intense criticism for failing to reduce tariffs during the winter months.
