Massive investment is needed in the UK's existing infrastructure if homeowners are to be able to switch energy to cheaper, greener alternatives, reports the BBC.
Experts at scientific organisation the Royal Society have called on the government to intervene in the sector to tackle the dominance of half a dozen major energy suppliers that have been criticised in recent months for not doing enough to help consumers.
Ministers have been called on to increase investment in renewable energy and to make sure that by 2020 carbon capture and storage technology fitted on coal-fired power plants removes 90 per cent of harmful greenhouse gases.
Lord Redesdale, vice chairman of the group, told the BBC: "We can either heat our homes and have hot baths, or fly but not both. There really does need to be much tougher policies on reducing carbon emissions from the homes."
Domestic energy efficiency is being viewed as one of the top priorities and landlords could soon face legislation preventing them from letting inefficient properties.
The government recently pledged to insulate every home in the UK as part of a nationwide efficiency drive.
