Homeowners could switch gas and electricity rates in Sussex eco homes - 05/08/2009

People looking to compare energy prices and get the best value for money might consider moving to one of six new eco homes in West Sussex, reports 24dash.com.

Local housing association Saxon Weald built each home for £160,000 and has installed solar panels and ground source heat pumps to generate clean heating and electricity, while the patios are specially designed to collect rainwater for use in the toilet cisterns.

The combined effects of the various clean energy measures could result in the homeowners paying energy bills of less than £85 a year, presenting a possible way to reduce fuel poverty in the UK.

Fuel poverty has been a particular issue since all the major energy companies increased their prices through the course of last year and have only implemented minor reductions in the last few months.

Friends of the Earth and Help the Aged recently tried to use the courts to force the government to take measures to achieve its flagging fuel poverty eradication targets, but the ruling was that ministers can only take what action is reasonably available.
