Google makes $38m investment in cheap energy project - 10/05/2010

Search engine giant Google has invested in a major cheap energy generating wind plant in the US.

The firm announced that it has injected $38.8 million (£26 million) into two North Dakota wind farm developments built by NextEra Energy Resources.

Both wind farms, which have a combined wind energy capacity of 170MW, will make use of the latest turbine technologies and control systems that constantly monitor output from each turbine.

The wind farms will also use technology that constantly adjusts individual blade angles in order to increase energy efficiency.

Rick Needham, green business operations manager at Google, said: "We've been dedicating resources to developing new technologies, including making investments in early-stage renewable energy companies such as eSolar and AltaRock."

He added that Google's latest investment will allow the company to generate attractive returns and speed up the deployment of the latest clean cheap energy technology.

In 2007, Google's charitable arm, Google.org, announced its Renewable Energy Cheaper Than Coal initiative, which pledged to invest millions into sustainable energy projects.
