The use of renewable wind power to generate cheap energy increased markedly last year, new figures show.
According to the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC), wind power generation increased by around 31 per cent in 2009.
Citing figures that are part of the Digest of UK Energy Statistics, the DECC showed that over the course of 2009, the UK generated around 9,304 Gwh of electric power from wind energy sources - enough to power more than two million homes across the country.
Moreover, between 2008 and 2009, the total amount of electric power produced from renewable energy increased by 20 per cent from 5.6 per cent to 6.7 per cent.
RenewableUK, a leading association for renewable trade energy, welcomed the figures but urged the government to set tougher targets.
Maria McCaffery, chief executive of RenewableUK, said: "These are promising statistics but we must go further and act faster. With one-third of our power supply needing to be replaced by 2015 we cannot delay in greater deployment of clean energy technologies."
