Commercial landlords 'will focus on energy comparison' - 04/01/2011
The subject of energy comparison will increasingly become an important consideration for landlords of commercial property, according to the British Property Federation.
Ian Fletcher, director of real estate policy at the organisation, commented that the house-building industry will see financial incentives to focusing on sustainability, which could include looking at how well a building conserves cheap energy.
"We are just starting to see the environmental performance being reflected in valuations of buildings and, as that becomes more common place, then that should be something that landlords are going to find they are going to have to take account of or they won't be the best performing businesses in our sector," he noted.
Mr Fletcher's comments follow King Sturge's report showing that in the wake of a recession, finding cheap electricity and gas deals is "imperative" to control the cost of using energy.
However, the research found that the price of adapting existing buildings to meet new legislation is likely to rise faster than general inflation.
