Scaling back support for green energy 'is irresponsible' - 03/03/2011

Scaling back the UK's renewable cheap energy investments is irresponsible at this time, the Centre for Alternative Technology has argued.

A spokeswoman for the organisation pointed out: "Less renewable energy means more fossil fuels, more fossil fuels means more green house gas emissions which in turn means temperature rises and ensuing chaos due to food and water shortages in large parts of the world.

"Scaling back investment in renewables at this time shows yet again the UK will not take responsibility for its emission production and continue to avoid real and meaningful action on climate change," the representative said.

Green electricity, heat and other renewable technologies could be one of the UK's fasting growing sectors and become a central part of an internationally competitive economy, she added.

"But they need support if they are to realise their full potential at the pace we need."

Meanwhile, energy supplier British Gas has confirmed plans to supply electric vehicle charging points for Nissan's Leaf model.
