There are many myths to be shattered before the UK starts building a new generation of nuclear power plants with which to meet its cheap energy needs.
This is the view of the Centre for Alternative Technology, whose representative noted that nuclear does not have the environmental benefits of other energy sources.
"There are a number of myths associated with nuclear energy and it is the myths associated and perpetuated about nuclear energy that are the most problematic. It is not a low carbon technology," the spokeswoman pointed out.
"Electricity generated from nuclear power entails no direct emissions of CO2, but the nuclear fuel cycle releases CO2 during mining, fuel enrichment and plant construction."
She argued that nuclear is not sustainable and produces toxic waste which "does not heed national borders".
Meanwhile, the BBC reports that the Energy and Climate Change Select Committee has accused government ministers of disguising subsidies to the nuclear power industry.
