People looking to compare energy suppliers in order to find cheap electricity and gas deals must be able to have confidence in the market.
This is according to prime minister David Cameron and energy secretary Chris Huhne, who wrote in a joint piece for MoneySavingExpert.com that it is essential the sector is simplified and made more transparent.
Ahead of a summit taking place today (October 17th) between the government, energy suppliers and consumer groups, Mr Cameron and Mr Huhne said the current situation is "far too complicated".
"First of all we want to clear up the bewildering array of tariffs and special offers provided by energy companies so people know how to get the best deal," they stated.
The politicians added they are determined that everything that can be done to help consumers bring their energy bills down will be done.
Today's summit will see discussions take place on what steps can be taken to halt spiralling gas and electricity prices, with chief executive of Consumer Focus Mike O'Connor saying people will want to see "concrete proposals" result from it.
