Trading standards warns against energy saving scam - 02/12/2011

People who are looking to get cheap electricity bills by performing an energy comparison have been warned to be wary of a new scam that in being seen throughout the country.

Trading Standards stated many consumers have received cold calls from salespeople offering plug-in devices that are claimed to cut their energy bills by up to 40 per cent.

Over 200 complaints have been received by the body about the items, which it stated do not deliver any tangible savings and could present a risk of fire and electrocution.

Spokeswoman for Westminster Trading Standards Sue Jones said: "We know that these fraudsters have been duping consumers across the country into paying £99 for the energy saving device and have been told the caller always appears to be very credible."

The scam appears convincing as they know a person's home address, current energy suppliers and even details of their credit or debit cards, she added.

Therefore, people looking to cut their gas and electricity bills are likely to be better off comparing energy suppliers to find a cheaper deal, as well as fitting energy efficiency measures such as insulation.
