Energy supplier Scottish Power has launched a new system that will help customers check if they are on the best deal and switch energy tariff to a more suitable option.
The web-based Midata platform also gives consumers easy access to information about their gas and electricity consumption history to offer them insight into what they can do to lower their bills.
The implementation of such a system is one of the steps the industry agreed to last year at a Downing Street summit on tackling prices, though Scottish Power is the first to launch its solution.
Chief executive at the provider Neil Clitheroe said: "The Midata concept is designed to empower customers when making decisions about their account and we are pleased to have delivered on the commitment we made to customers at the Energy Summit last year."
He added it will build greater trust among customers by opening greater transparency about their energy costs.
The move was welcomed by energy campaign manager at Which? Peter Moorey, who said it will help people make better decisions for the future about their energy usage.
