Gentoo has announced its Pay As You Save (Pays) trial has proven successful, with housing tenants saving between £88 and £125 a year on electricity prices.
The results of the study revealed both electricity and gas consumption were considerably lower than expected, which helps to reduce emissions.
However, the research found that some tenants are opting for comfort over savings and choose to ignore advice on making properties more energy efficient.
Dave Worthington, managing director of energy consultants Verco, said: "Comparing ... information from customer surveys has allowed us to conclude that the standard assumptions ... can exaggerate the potential for savings and that tenants are generally prioritising comfort over cost."
A total of 119 homes were involved in the Pays pilot with elderly customers found to be the ones making the most of the service.
