Experts fear threat to cheap energy in UK as Russia cuts off Ukraine - 02/01/2009

Experts are concerned that future cheap energy supplies to the UK may be threatened by Russia's decision to cut off Ukraine.

The Russian government cut off Ukraine's gas supply having insisted that the country had failed to pay substantial energy bills, but the move could affect the rest of Europe as Ukraine pipelines carry around 20 per cent of Europe's total gas requirements. Although the supply to other European countries has not been affected, uncertainty among UK energy suppliers could threaten the introduction of cheap energy rates.

In the UK, a spokesperson for the Department of Energy told the Guardian: "We urge both parties to treat this as a commercial matter and seek agreement through negotiation."

The spokesperson dismissed concerns that the dispute would adversely affect the UK's gas supply as only a small percentage of Britain's gas demand was met by Russian imports.

Energy suppliers have said they may be able to deliver cheap energy rates to UK consumers by the spring.
