Funding puts Norwich energy efficiency plan in doubt - 06/03/2009

Homeowners in Norwich may find a decision to switch gas and electricity companies the best way to reduce bills as a funding issue could jeopardise energy efficiency plans.

Norwich Evening News 24 reports that a scheme to provide free insulation in Norwich homes and help to cut energy bills is being considered by the city council, but the £2 million price tag could mean it is too expensive.

Contributions from energy companies have been suggested, along with prudential borrowing, but potential interest of £100,000 a year may have to be factored into the final decision.

Adrian Ramsay, leader of the Green party at City Hall in Norwich, told the website: "This is an important step towards creating lower fuel bills throughout the city and helping Norwich to play its part in preventing climate damage. We must explore every option to do this."

Judith Lubbock, a Liberal Democrat councillor, voiced her concern that the scheme could end up funding insulation for people who could pay for it themselves.

Home insulation prevents heat energy escaping and helps reduce fuel bills.
