East Surrey MP backs cheap energy bill - 16/03/2009

The MP for East Surrey has announced his support for the upcoming Fuel Poverty bill, which has been designed to tackle the impact of price rises from energy suppliers.

Redhill and Reigate Life reports that Peter Ainsworth is supporting the bill in response to new data from Consumer Focus revealing that a sixth of East Surrey households are struggling with energy bills.

Mr Ainsworth said the bill would help families across the UK to access more affordable energy and be able to heat their homes.

The MP told the paper: "The current economic crisis has already left thousands of families worried about how they will make ends meet and it is my hope that this bill will make life a little easier for some of the most vulnerable in our society."

If passed, the bill will help pave the way for widespread energy efficiency measures across the UK in the form of insulation and additional domestic features.

In autumn of last year the government opted to promote energy efficiency rather than impose a windfall tax on energy companies.
