People thinking they may compare gas and electricity companies may be relieved to hear that Ed Miliband has written to E.On asking the firm to avoid issuing large backdated bills.
The secretary of state for energy has written in response to news that the energy company plans to send out substantial backdated bills to Nottingham homeowners whose energy meters have not been properly updated with price increases, reports the Nottingham Evening Post.
Many customers have been paying cheaper, outdated rates as the energy company has failed to carry out the necessary manual changes to their metering.
According to the paper, Mr Miliband told the company: "In respect of token meters, my concerns are therefore focused on those vulnerable customers who, through no fault of their own, have not had their meter recalibrated or replaced."
E.On said that the company is committed to assisting its most vulnerable customers, although it believes writing off all the existing recalibration debt would be unfair to customers paying revised prices.
The firm recently announced an electricity price cut of nine per cent.
