Homeowners looking to switch energy companies could also benefit from the fuel poverty bill being discussed in parliament today (Friday March 20th).
David Heath, Liberal Democrat shadow leader of the house, has brought the bill forward as a way of reducing the number of UK households living in fuel poverty.
The bill outlines powers for the secretary of state to limit how much vulnerable households are charged for their energy supply, while also providing easier access to home insulation and other energy-saving domestic features.
David Heath said: "Sky-high fuel bills left millions of people shivering in homes they could not afford to heat last winter. Ministers have dragged their feet on this issue and unless they act soon thousands more will die this year."
He added that the government needs to address the issue of fuel poverty much more effectively in order to permanently eradicate the problem.
All the major energy suppliers have been criticised for failing to reduce their prices during the recent bitterly cold winter months.
