Energy suppliers to build biggest wind farm - 19/05/2009

Cheap energy prices could eventually be delivered with the creation of the biggest offshore wind farm in the world off the coast of Kent and Essex.

The farm will be built 12 miles into the outer estuary of the Thames by three major energy companies including E.On and will comprise 175 separate turbines over an area of 90 sq miles, for a price of £2.2 billion.

Intended to be operational within four years, the turbines will eventually generate 1GW of electricity and could be capable of powering 25 per cent of London homes.

Prime minister Gordon Brown said: "The London Array is a flagship project in our drive to cut emissions by 80 per cent by 2050 and meet future energy needs. That's why we have increased our support for this technology as we move towards a low carbon future."

The array could save nearly two million tonnes of carbon dioxide every year, helping to reduce the UK's national carbon footprint, while cheaper energy rates could also be attainable in the long-term.

Offshore wind farms are a popular concept owing to their reduced visual impact on local landscapes.
