Worcestershire restaurants urged to take part in cheap energy week - 01/10/2009

Restaurants and eateries throughout Worcestershire are being urged to reduce bills from energy suppliers by switching off their lights for part of an upcoming energy-saving week.

Worcestershire county council is organising Switch It Off Week and is encouraging restaurants in Pershore and Evesham to take part by turning all their lights off on at least one night during the campaign in the second week of November, reports the Evesham Journal.

Restaurants are being asked to turn off their lights in favour of candles, so energy consumption will be reduced and guests can enjoy a romantic evening meal.

Councillor Anthony Blagg, Worcestershire county council's cabinet member for sustainability, told the paper: "As well as attracting customers who are keen to enjoy the romance and intimacy of candlelight, restaurants can also take a step towards greater energy-efficiency and lower bills."

This part of the campaign has been dubbed Dine By Candlelight and the council is inviting restaurants to sign up to signal their involvement.

Restaurants can save on their business energy bills by turning off non-essential electrical equipment and using energy-saving light bulbs.
