Scottish government challenged to invest more in cheap energy through efficiency - 02/10/2009

The Scottish government has been called upon to tackle bills from energy suppliers and reduce demand by heightening investment in nationwide efficiency.

Spending an additional £100 million a year has been highlighted by the economy, energy and tourism committee as a reasonable figure to overhaul Scotland's energy policies and reduce the number of people living in fuel poverty, reports the Scotsman.

Iain Smith, a Liberal Democrat MSP who convened the committee, added that existing nuclear power stations in Scotland may have to have their lives extended to avoid having to build new ones.

The government was criticised once again for refusing to consider a potential role for nuclear power in the country's energy future.

Energy minister Jim Mather reiterated the Scottish government's dedication to energy issues and said energy efficiency is one of the central elements of the government's plans.

Scotland leads the UK in terms of renewable energy generation.

Homes can be made more energy-efficient by installing measures such as cavity wall and loft insulation.
