The government should not impose a new tax on top of existing energy supplier bills to help subsidise nuclear redevelopment in the UK, according to the Taxpayers' Alliance.
A combination of nuclear and renewable power is intended by the government to ensure Britain's energy security, but the Guardian has reported that a levy is being considered to help fund the building of the first new nuclear reactors.
Matthew Sinclair, research director for the Taxpayers' Alliance, criticised the news saying prices need to be reduced, especially for elderly consumers who are frequently the most vulnerable.
Mr Sinclair said: "Any additional levy which pushes up the price of electricity will cause serious hardship for taxpayers, increase fuel poverty and add to winter mortality."
According to the expert, nearly 15 per cent of additional electricity bills are already being paid by consumers to fund climate change policies.
EDF is scheduled to lead nuclear redevelopment in the UK to help consumers switch energy sources, but has already sold a stake in British Energy to Centrica to help reduce its debt.
