Energy suppliers have been urged to be aware of the environmental issues posed by smart metering.
Telematic firm Trimble, which helps firms meet their green business energy targets, said utility companies should be prepared for the changeover to eco-friendly smart meters, which will replace 46 million utility meters in Britain by 2020.
The firm said the nationwide installation process must be as green as possible and energy suppliers need to address how to minimise their CO2 emissions as the smart metering roll out begins next year.
Andrew Yeoman, managing director of Trimble, said: "This is the biggest and most complex change the energy industry has seen in half a century.
"As smart metering is all about improving the efficiency of the domestic energy industry, the installation must mirror this."
Smart meters are designed to enable householders to see exactly where their energy is being used and allows them to send real-time meter readings back to their energy suppliers.
