Facebook urged to focus on renewable cheap energy - 02/09/2010

Social networking site Facebook has come under pressure to switch its use of coal-powered electricity for renewable cheap energy.

According to Greenpeace International, 500,000 people are now protesting the social media giant's use of coal power to produce electricity for its new US-based data centre.

In February, Facebook announced plans to build what is expected to be the largest centralised data storage centre in the world in Portland, Oregon using coal power for 67 per cent of electricity and renewable cheap energy sources for just 12 per cent.

Kumi Naidoo, director of Greenpeace International, urged Facebook chief executive Mark Zuckerberg to phase out the company's use of non-renewable fossil fuels for cleaner options.

"Facebook is uniquely positioned to be a truly visible and influential leader to drive the deployment of clean energy," Mr Naidoo said.

He added that the company is putting its reputation and financial health at risk if it does not do more to mitigate the environmental impact of its use of coal power.
