Isle of Man energy increases 'very disappointing' - 04/10/2010

The Isle of Man's Office of Fair Trading (OFT) has denounced price hikes by energy suppliers as "very disappointing".

Cheap energy tariffs could become harder to find for consumers living on the island, which is set to be hit by price increases instigated by Manx Gas.

OFT chair Bill Henderson commented that it is disappointing that the company is raising costs at a time when many people are suffering wage freezes and high inflation.

"It is our job on behalf of the public to try and obtain explanations for any price increases and as far as possible ensure that any price hikes can be reasonably justified," he said, adding that these increases highlight the "growing need for effective regulation" of energy suppliers.

Last month, Manx Gas announced it would be forced to raise prices from October 8th because it can no longer afford to bear the brunt of global market pressures on energy costs.
