Carbon capture and storage 'is important part of future for renewable energy' - 01/03/2011

Energy users hoping to switch gas might be interested to hear about the future of renewable energy.

According to Dr Jeff Chapman, chief executive of the Carbon Capture and Storage Association (CCSA), carbon capture and storage is an "important part of the puzzle" because renewable sources can be intermittent.

"It needs the flexibility of fossil fuel power stations in order to penetrate the power market. Into the future, we can only operate fossil fuel power stations if we can control the emissions from them," he pointed out.

Therefore, he said: "CCS is an absolutely crucial component for the future of power generation, including renewable energy."

Dr Chapman's comments come after the Department of Energy and Climate Change announced that 14 projects in the UK have applied for EU funding, nine of which are carbon capture and storage initiatives.

The EU's New Entrant Reserve is offering up to nine billion euro worth of funding to support the technology and other green electricity projects across its member states.
