Cornish town in drive to become energy self-sufficient - 01/03/2011

Energy comparison customers in a North Cornwall town might have been part of a drive to make Wadebridge energy self-sufficient.

According to The Herald, support from Wadebridge's residents has been "overwhelming" since the town's Wadebridge Renewable Energy Network co-operative was launched in January.

Stephen Frankel, spokesman for the network, told the newspaper that several factors have persuaded local householders to pledge their support.

"The economic energy deficit in this town is extreme - a lot of money is going out of Cornwall. But there are lots of benefits to be had which people do not realise are there," he explained.

"Now it seems that people are waking up to the potential to move towards energy self-sufficiency and keep money in Cornwall.

"If we respond to the encouragement and go to scale, we could not only have a chance of fulfilling those ambitions but also have a reputation as 'the' place for renewable energy," Mr Frankel added.

Meanwhile, a housing development in County Durham is using solar panels to power the properties.
