British Gas supports Toyota's solar upgrade - 02/08/2011

One of the Big Six energy suppliers has turned to solar energy in conjunction with vehicle manufacturer Toyota, cheap electricity customers might be interested to hear.

British Gas has teamed up with the motor marque to install 17,000 solar panels on the roof of Toyota's Burnaston site in Derbyshire, which is set to save 4.6 million kWh of energy and reduce carbon emissions by 2,000 tonnes each year.

Colin MacDonald, head of microgeneration at British Gas, commented: "This new solar array - one of the biggest in the UK - demonstrates how an energy intensive industry like manufacturing can lead the way to a low carbon future.

"As well as improving Derbyshire's green credentials, we hope it will act as a beacon for other homes and businesses throughout the county to think about renewable energy," he added.

The car maker now has five 'eco-factories' around the world and the latest upgrade to the facility also includes features such as a wall of solar glass to replace windows and sunshades made of solar panels to be fitted above the panes.
