Regulator welcomes measures to boost confidence - 19/12/2011

Ofgem has welcomed a move by energy supplier Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE) to offer compensation to any consumers who were mis-sold deals in the belief they were getting a cheap electricity and gas tariff.

Last week, the provider announced it would be writing to all customers who signed contracts as a result of doorstep marketing techniques detailing how they can apply for a refund by demonstrating they were given inaccurate information.

Partner for sustainable development at Ofgem Sarah Harrison praised SSE's decision, which recognises problems with low consumer confidence identified in the regulator's review of the market earlier this year.

"SSE is right to point out that this confidence can only be restored by suppliers treating consumers fairly and we welcome this move in that direction," she said, noting it is good to see Ofgem's action is having a positive impact on the sector.

Ms Harrison observed that while the regulator is looking forward to seeing how SSE promotes its compensation scheme, the move will not alter Ofgem's ongoing investigation into SSE's doorstep selling practices.
