Energy firms call for binding renewables target - 06/06/2012

Several energy suppliers from across Europe have called on the EU to set binding targets for the use of renewable energy by 2030.

The coalition - which includes SSE, Eneco, Dong Energy and Stadtwerke Munchen - said such a solution is needed to bridge the "policy gap" between 2020 and 2050 targets.

They warned the absence of a 2030 strategy will put the growth of renewable energy at risk and undermine efforts to cut carbon by between 80 and 95 per cent by 2050.

According to the coalition, a clear and legally-binding goal for 2030 "would allow companies to continue to invest in long term and sustainable supply chains, as well as to continue to work to bring down costs".

It would also support the EU Emissions Trading Scheme, which will not be enough on its own to drive investment in renewables beyond 2020, the group said.

Last month, the government unveiled plans for a large-scale reform of the electricity market in the UK that should encourage the development of renewable power sources.
