Domestic energy customers could receive a significant proportion of their electricity from green sources in the future, a government-backed report has suggested.
According to the Arup research, if investment is put into planning and grid connections, UK residents could receive 35 per cent of their total energy requirements from renewable sources.
More than 197,000 gigawatt-hours of green electricity could be generated in 2020 under the vision Arup sets out, with this figure rising to 424,000 gWh in 2030.
The green energy could be produced by wind turbines, solar panels and other clean, green sources such as biomass boilers, anaerobic digestion, ground source heat pumps and marine technologies.
