Business energy users need to play their role in cutting carbon emissions and getting the UK back on track to meeting its renewable energy targets.
This is the view of Alex Randall, spokesman for the Centre for Alternative Technology, who stated that such targets should be more ambitious.
"Our research shows that the UK could be powered entirely by renewables by 2030. So the fact that the government is not even meeting their own less ambitious targets is disappointing," he argued.
Businesses which use cheap electricity could be among those looking to see where they can cut energy wastage.
"As well as sticking to renewable energy targets, the government also needs to look more seriously at reducing energy demand. Consuming less energy is also a vital part of any strategy for reducing carbon emissions," Mr Randall added.
His comments come in light of the Public Accounts Committee announcement that the government will miss its 2010 target to derive ten per cent of all energy from renewable sources and could miss its 2020 target if efforts are not stepped up.
