Britain to remain 'committed' to gas - 26/07/2012

Chancellor George Osborne has announced Britain will remain committed to gas production to fuel the country's energy supplies.

According to Mr Osborne, gas will continue to form a major part of Britain's energy mix.

However, his comments have angered environmentalists who claim the government should be focusing on renewable energy.

Critics claim concentrating on "unabated" gas supplies could leave the UK dangerously dependent on a power source that has to be imported.

One of the reasons for the support of gas power is due to it being viewed as more reliable and cost-effective than other forms of energy.

Mr Osborne's comments follow the announcement of ten per cent subsidy cuts to onshore wind turbine funding.

The reduction is less than the 25 per cent reduction called for by some ministers.
