Industry experts have warned that more investment is needed in order to facilitate improvements in the UK's infrastructure and produce cheap energy prices, reports the Financial Times.
The government has announced plans to build three new gas-fired power stations but experts say that more improvements are needed in the near future.
There are still concerns that the closure of several fossil fuel-powered stations in the coming years will threaten the UK's cheap energy future and risk widespread blackouts.
Writing in the newspaper, Andrew Duff, chief executive of RWE NPower, said: "The drive to set and meet ever more stringent CO2 targets is not integrated with the ministerial push to tackle energy costs and, vitally, the need to ensure security of supply."
Concerns could be fuelled by the fact that the new stations announced by the government will generate only a third of the energy produced by those that are soon due to close.
Nuclear regeneration in the UK is due to be instigated by energy supplier EDF over the coming years.
