Cheap energy tidal machine to be connected to grid - 05/08/2009

People looking to switch energy companies to get electricity generated from cleaner sources could be encouraged by news that a new tidal project will be connected to the grid.

The £42 million Wave Hub project will be built off the coast of Cornwall next year and Powermann, based in Poole, will provide a range of resources including onshore facilities to enable the technology to connect to the grid as part of a £1 million agreement.

The device will be operational in 2011 and will have the capacity to produce electricity for 7,000 homes, as well as being a testing ground for a range of tidal power technologies.

Nigel Ritchie-Lilley, engineering manager for Powermann, said: "As a south-west-based business we're pleased to be playing a role in such a groundbreaking project, which will put the region on the world stage for the development of wave energy devices."

The UK is committed to generating 15 per cent of its national energy demand from renewable sources by 2020 and the government recently announced plans to dramatically escalate the development of offshore wind farms.
