Within the last year, a quarter of homeowners have decided to pursue cheap energy rates by switching suppliers, according to a new survey from Heatkeeper.
The figures revealed 40 per cent of the 3,000 people surveyed have begun turning down their thermostats to reduce carbon emissions and save money from energy supplier bills, while 65 per cent are taking more care to switch off lights.
Younger people seem to be less concerned about the issues, with those under the age of 21 less likely to see turning lights off as a priority.
Bob Shire, director of Heatkeeper, said: "There are lots of other simple and cost-effective ways to save energy without having to shell out huge sums for solar heating or wind turbines."
He added something as straightforward as fitting radiator insulation panels can reduce annual energy bills by 20 per cent.
Homeowners could also consider changing their old white goods for newer, more energy-efficient models.
