People looking to switch energy practices by adopting greater domestic efficiency could be put off by the costs recently suggested, according to an expert.
Gordon Miller, founder of whatgreenhome.com, was responding to a suggestion from Lord Adair Turner, chairman of the Committee on Climate Change, who said that up to £15,000 could be needed from each homeowner to dramatically pursue domestic efficiency.
Mr Miller said a significant impact can be made very cheaply by making small changes such as turning down thermostats and fitting draught excluders, rather than spending thousands.
He added: "Lord Turner is putting the cart before the horse a little bit here. Most people in the UK haven't even done the basics yet."
Lord Turner has called for a significant increase in the number of renewable energy projects being developed to contribute towards the "radical decarbonisation" of electricity.
As many as 90,000 low-income homes will get whole-house energy makeovers to tackle fuel poverty levels, the Department of Energy and Climate Change recently announced.
