'Funding of heat pumps could increase cheap energy usage' - 01/06/2010

The government needs to increase funding for heat pumps in order to persuade people to increase their usage of cheap energy, an expert has said.

Stewart Purchase, director of the housing division at Geothermal International, said funding for the installation of heat pumps is crucial to increased take-up of the technology because the upfront costs of heat pumps is the main issue preventing people from installing the devices.

He explained that heat pumps provide a means for people to reduce fuel bills from their energy suppliers and increase their eco credentials.

"Being an electrically based appliance, you are not burning any fossil fuel in the home and obviously if you can get access to green electricity, it makes it very good," Mr Purchase said.

He added that incentives such as the renewable heat initiative will increase take-up of energy efficiency products by allowing householders to claim a grant to help reduce the initial cost of the equipment.
