Gas pipe plans for Oxfordshire village - 01/03/2011

Cheap gas customers in a village in Oxfordshire will soon be receiving their supplies through a new pipe.

The Henley Standard reported that refurbishment plans for the Whitchurch toll bridge means energy supplier Southern Gas Networks will have to reroute the existing supply pipe.

Although the cost of the operation is set to be "considerable", the energy company appears to have little option but to tunnel eight metres under the Thames, cross through a meadow and run along some roads.

A Southern Gas spokesman told the newspaper: The work is taking place next year. One of the possibilities we had looked at was running a gas pipe across the temporary footbridge but this is not possible for its safety and security.

"Instead, we could possibly run gas pipes through some of the fields and into the village that way," he added.

Any trenches where the pipe is close to the surface can be bridged with iron plates, the newspaper stated.
