RWE npower considers new energy plant in Hampshire - 03/06/2011

Hampshire householders who would like to switch gas suppliers might be interested to hear that RWE npower is considering opening another energy plant at Fawley.

The energy supplier is looking into the possibility of developing a distillate oil-fired open cycle gas turbine (OCGT) at its existing site because its Fawley Power Station is due to close at the end of 2015.

OCGT facilities are able to produce large amounts of cheap electricity quickly for a short period of time and are ideal to provide a boost to the national grid when demand is high.

Nick Stockdale, manager of the power station, commented: "Recognising that any new development has potential impacts on the local community and environment, we will be undertaking thorough investigations and developing proposals which are sensitive to the local area."

Meanwhile, Germany has decided to shut down all its nuclear reactors by 2022, which could have repercussions for the price of energy in the UK.
