Customers who are inclined to compare energy prices to switch gas tariffs might be interested to know that Ofgem is to look into how energy suppliers require their customers to pay off debt.
Utility Week reported that the watchdog is set to look at the difference between how pre-payment customers and credit clients pay their balance, as there appears to be some discrepancy.
"With the continuing difficult economic conditions and recent increases in energy prices, we expect suppliers to deal sympathetically with customers who are struggling to pay bills," the regulator said.
In a letter to staff, Jude Cummins, associate partner of sustainable development at Ofgem, noted that the number of disconnections for customer debt fell in the first quarter of this year.
Electricity disconnections declined by 89 per cent from the first three months of 2010, while gas disconnections dropped 82 per cent, the watchdog's research found.
