Consumer Focus: All energy suppliers should suspend doorstep sales - 15/08/2011

All of the major energy suppliers should take a leaf out of British Gas' book and suspend their doorstep sales activity, householders wanting to compare energy prices might agree.

Adam Scorer, director of external affairs at Consumer Focus, welcomed the energy supplier's move and called on the other providers to follow suit, arguing that it is what responsible companies do when their customers are unhappy.

"For over a decade cold call doorstep sales have led to hundreds of thousands of people paying more for their energy after switching to a worse deal," he pointed out.

"We know people strongly dislike doorstep sales, feel pressured to switch at the door and that energy firms don’t offer their best rates face-to-face. Cold call energy sales simply aren't what customers need or want."

Earlier this summer, Scottish and Southern Energy announced its own suspension of doorstep sales following Consumer Focus' request.
