A US-based energy efficiency firm could help people in the UK get cheap electricity in the future as it looks to expand into Europe.
BusinessGreen reports that Opower - which has received endorsements from Barack Obama and David Cameron - has signed a deal with First Utility as part of a plan to boost its global operations.
The firm develops software that allows consumers to measure their energy use and access tips on how to cut power consumption.
It has already secured deals with 60 utility suppliers in the US since launching in 2007 - including eight of the ten largest firms - and was recently named as one of the country's most promising private companies by Forbes magazine.
Senior vice-president and managing director for Europe, the Middle East and Africa at Opower Nandini Basuthakur said: "There is a huge opportunity to transform the relationship between utilities and the customer."
She added that if energy suppliers are seen to be efficient and help optimise their customers' usage, they can boost their reputation as providers of a good service.
