The secretary of state for energy and climate change has encouraged people to perform a price comparison to see if they can find cheaper gas and electricity prices.
Chris Huhne welcomed the recent round of price cuts, though he added customers need to ensure energy suppliers compete for their business by demanding the cheapest offers.
He said: "My message to consumers is this: make the companies work for your money. Shop around and if you find a better deal, switch."
Mr Huhne added it is right that domestic energy users should be able to benefit from recent falls in wholesale prices, as companies were quick to pass on extra expenses when costs rose last year.
The timing of the drops coincides with Big Energy Week, the minister noted, which runs from January 16th to 21st and will see advice offered to people around the country about how to cut their gas and electricity bills.
