The cost benefits of improving business energy efficiency provide incentives for firms to change their approach to energy usage, an expert has said.
Jim Haywood, environmental director at Business in the Community, pointed out that simply turning off electrical equipment at the weekend could help firms save around £6,000 a year.
Speaking at the Retail Now event, Mr Haywood stressed the importance of businesses meeting environmental legislation such as the Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC) Energy Efficiency Scheme as they strive to become more sustainable.
"Businesses [that] take these things seriously and manage their businesses well are going to be in a much better position to meet legislation like the CRC energy reduction commitment and other new legislation which comes on stream as the years unfold," he said.
Mr Haywood added that firms that perform well in the Business in the Community corporate responsibility index will improve their performance on the FTSE 350 by between 3.3 and 7.7 per cent as a result of their attitude to sustainability.
