Business electricity users have expressed disappointment that the government has opted to put off a decision on the introduction of mandatory carbon reporting.
The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs told parliament this week it needs more time to consider submissions to its consultation.
BusinessGreen reports proposals for compulsory reporting have received wide support from businesses, industry groups and environmental campaigners, who say it will be an effective way to reduce bills and greenhouse gas output.
Guy Newey, senior research fellow at Policy Exchange, told the publication: "Mandatory emissions reporting is potentially one of the most cost-effective policies to help businesses cut their emissions."
He added the lack of progress is "very disappointing".
Gareth Stace, head of climate and environment policy at EEF, the manufacturers' organisation, added the delay is a step back, as the proposed scheme could play a key part in making enterprises greener.
