Energy from waste incinerator approved - 25/07/2012

The construction of an incinerator that will help transform energy from waste has been approved by communities secretary Eric Pickles.

Mercia Waste Management will develop the EnviRecover facility, which will be used to treat household waste collected by Herefordshire and Worcestershire councils.

The incinerator will have a 200,000 tonne-a-year capacity and will be situated in Hartlebury in Worcestershire.

It is expected to provide up to 15.5 MW of electricity, which is enough to supply around 20,000 homes.

Mercia director John Plant said the incinerator "represents a solution that will be both effective and economically sustainable" in the hunt for an environmentally-friendly form of waste management.

Mr Plant added that the company is "delighted" the secretary of state has approved the site, which had been disputed due to it being on Green Belt land.
